MichaelFast and versatile, Microsoft Edge has a serious edge on its predecessor, internet explorer

A review by Michael

A cross-platform web browser developed by Microsoft, Edge is the default browser on Windows 10 and later replacing Internet Explorer and aiming to provide a convenient, secure, and safe browsing experience.

Pros

  • Simple interface
  • Fast and user-friendly
  • Tab organization tools
  • Page markup
  • Reading mode
  • Works as PDF and ebooker reader
  • On-page lookup

Cons

  • Some sites don’t work
  • No history search
  • Supports a lesser number of extensions

One of the most advanced internet browsers of the time, Microsoft Edge is built on the Chromium project which is why it has several similarities with Google Chrome. It syncs your Microsoft account, uses Bing as the default search engine, and offers a similar browsing experience while being light on resources. It offers a good selection of extensions and even works with Google add-ons.

The browser integrates with Microsoft services and tools to provide additional functionality like search, voice control, and dynamic information within the address bar. It allows making annotations to pages with the ability to save and share to OneDrive and even lets you save HTML pages to local storage. It also integrates with ‘Reading List’ and gives you a ‘Reading Mode’ that takes away unnecessary formatting from pages for distraction-free reading.

The latest versions of Edge boast a lightweight design to use less memory and reduce load time. The lower memory use also allows faster browsing, smooth scrolling, and a better experience. Like other industry leaders, Edge offers instant answers to questions through integration with services like Cortana.

Final Verdict

Microsoft Edge is quite a good improvement over Internet Explorer in terms of compatibility and speed. Its performance and clean and lightweight interface make it a worthy choice for Windows users. Though it was known to have some faults and was avoided in the past, the built-in Chromium-based browser in Windows 10 is something worth giving a try. It offers most of the perks of Google Chrome with the bonus of being light on resources. If you are someone not so fond of revealing your internet things to Google, it is an excellent browser alternative.
