A review by Michael

Audacity is a free and open-source digital audio editor and recording application software. Audacity is a recording application software and digital audio editor, available for macOS/OS X, Windows, and Unix-like operating systems. It was released on May 28, 2000, as open-source and free software. These are the main feature of audacity:

With the help of this software, users can both capture streaming audio and record live using a microphone (or a mixer). Recording comes with many options and features, the most important being the Toolbar tools. From here, users have access to the Recording Channels, Playback Device, Resizer, Audio Host, Recording Device, and Audio Grabber.

An important feature which all audio editors posess and must be mentioned is the editing functionalities of audacity. This allows users to edit their recordings or other audio files. They can Copy, Paste, Cut, and Delete audio clips, and users have the undo option in case they made a mistake. Envelope Tool, Draw Tool, Automatic Crash Recovery, and Label Tracks are other features that will help you in editing audio tracks.

If the audio file that a user wants to create is a song, tutorial, and so on, effects are very important and useful. Audacity comes with some built-in effects, such as Echo, Reverse, Extreme Stretch, Phaser, etc. Other advantages of this feature are that users can filter a frequency selection using spectral edit effects, adjust volume with Amplify, Crossfade Clips, Compressor, Fade In/Out, use Parametric EQ, and Adjustable Fade effects, change tempo (without affecting the pitch) or pitch (without changing the tempo), use Auto Duck to create DJ sets, and many other more.

Import and Export

Audacity has the ability to import and export audio in a large variety of file formats, like AU, AIFF, WAV, FLAC, AC3, WMA, M4A/M4R(ACC), Ogg Vorbis files and all formats that are supported by “libsndfile”. If WAV and AIFF files are read directly from a source, users can use the option “On-Demand” in order to import these files almost instantly, which will save them time by letting them start their work in no time.

Sound Quality

Besides all these useful features, Audacity supports 32-bit, 24-bit, and 16-bit samples and it converts sample rates and formats using high-quality dithering and resampling. More than that, it can convert tracks in real-time with different sample rates or formats.

Users can either use the plug-ins that are offered by Audacity (VST, LV2, Nyquist, LADSPA, and Audio Unit effect plug-ins), or load in user-made plugins. Using a text editor, users have the opportunity to modify the effects that are written in Nyquist too.

The principal disadvantage of Audacity is the fact that effects can’t be used in real time while recording. Another negative aspect of this editor, is that ACC, WMA, AC3, and other restricted or proprietary file formats can’t be imported or exported unless the user has an optional FFmpeg library.

Due to the fact that it is free and open source software, Audacity is one of the most popular audio editors. It has many features that come in handy, and it gives audio engineers, music produces, podcasters and singers almost everything they need to do a better and faster job.
