MichaelAn open-source browser based on Firefox

A review by Michael

Designed by the team behind the Pale Moon browser, Basilisk is an open-source alternative browser based on the Firefox engine. It intends to offer Mozilla’s features and options along with additional functionality.

Pros

  • Fast rendering
  • Support for Mozilla-style extensions
  • Firefox-like interface
  • Open-source for Windows and Linux
  • Import/export bookmarks and data
  • Customizable appearance and behavior

Cons

  • Supports 64-bit systems only
  • Still in beta phase
  • Security might be a concern

Basilisk is an excellent choice if you miss the classic look and feel of Firefox or need to use legacy extensions. It is a XUL-based web browser for Windows and Linux that supports a wide range of functions that make it a reliable, modern Firefox alternative. It supports CSS, advanced scripts, downloadable font, and NPAPI elements.

Basilisk is built upon the XUL platform and aims at delivering a Firefox alternative that retains support for extensions. It is compatible with legacy add-ons that you can easily install from Mozilla pages. As the browser is in its development phase, the user interface is likely to undergo some changes in the future.

The browser interface resembles a lot with Mozilla Firefox with a similar Options section that lets you change the appearance and behavior of the browser, configure privacy-related settings, manage content and notifications and configure the search engine.

Users can enjoy a modern browser’s features with capabilities like changing the default search engine, working with multiple tabs, deleting history, and exporting bookmarks and data to other browsers.

Final Verdict

Basilisk is a powerful browser that delivers all the perks of Firefox and allows using some of its extensions, along with other standard features.

Though it is still in its development phase and may contain some errors, it is an excellent choice for Windows and Linux users looking for a robust modern web browser. The latest updates even offer a portable version that can be run from any external storage device without installing.
