A review by Michael

Microsoft Office 2013 is the 2013 release of the well-known productivity office suite.  It was released on January 29, 2013 and is, with Microsoft Office 365, considered the successor of Microsoft Office 2010. Office 2013 offers new features like simplified UI with the support optimized touch interfaces, and greater compatibility with different types of documents including Portable Document Format (PDF) that can now be opened and changed directly in Word 2013.

Licensing and requirements of Office 2013 software

Note that Office 2013 software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Access, Publisher) can also be obtained separately, as well as Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project that are not available in other offers. Unlike Office 2010, the Office 2013 retail license is transferable to another computer with some minor restrictions. The Office 365 license is transferable without restriction using the admin console on Office.com5. The development of this version of Office started in 2010 and ended on October 11, 2012. Office 2013 is now available on the market since January 29, 2013. The suite is suitable for IA-32 and x64 systems and requires a system Operating Windows 7 or 8, Server 2008 R2 or newer versions. It is not compatible with Windows XP or Vista.

Which features are new in Office 2013?

  • Office 2013 is now connected to OneDrive online storage, allowing you to access documents from any computer and share them with other OneDrive users
  • Office 2013 offers features for assisted sharing of documents on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn
  • Office 2013 now supports ODF 1.219 and is OOXML compliant with the standard defined by the ISO20 organization and named Strict Open XML by Microsoft
  • A new interface design to be more modern, streamlined and compatible across devices. Users might notice the appearance of small animations when typing or selecting text in Word and Excel.

Office Online is now better!

Microsoft had updated Office Online applications (that were launched with Office 2010) as Office Web Apps. Office Online is a restricted and online suite of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. This suite is used directly from a web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, FireFox, Chrome) and allows you to open, edit or share a Word document online even without having Office on your device. This suite has the same user interface as the software. The Preview version of the Office Web Apps Preview was uploaded to SkyDrive on July 16, 2012. Users can use Office Online to create documents for free, and can download the documents locally on their machine.
