A Chinese MOBA game that is no longer played outside of China

A review by James

Realm of the Titans is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena video game developed by Studio Ningbo Shengguang Tianyi, which is a division of the conglomerate Ningbo Shengguang Industries, and published by Aeria Games for the Microsoft Windows platform only, and was released on this platform as a free-to-play (FTP) game in China on October 10, 2010. Almost a year after its release in China, Realm of the Titans was released in North America, in 2011.

A successor of Dota 1

Like many concurrent MOBA video games of its generation, the gameplay and aesthetics of Realm of the Titans is derived from the custom-made mod map called Defense of the Ancients (DotA), from the highly revered Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, which was an official expansion to the high fantasy real-time strategy game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Being derived from a mod made for a real-time strategy game, Realm of the Titans features a gameplay style that utilizes skills as well as strategic planning, which is supported by its hero skill selection and map planning.

Choose from over 100 heroes, and dozes of hero skills

In Realm of the Titans, players choose a hero character from the shockingly huge roster of above 140, each defined with unique skill sets that make them stand out and are useful against specific enemies or in specific times. Each character has four skills, which can be upgraded with experience points collected from winning matches. There are also 25 other skills which are indifferent to character selection and are changeable every 3 minutes, and help either supplement a hero’s weakness in battle or complement his strength. This design decision helps to induce variety and creativity in a match. Each hero has a balanced out Attack, Defense, and Speed rating. For example, a hero having huge attack power will have lesser defense stats, while a hero having higher speed stats will have a lower attack and/or defense stats. This helps to ensure that every player on the field is evenly matched and no player can be outplayed simply based on character stats.

5v5 in a three-lane map

Players then form teams with different heroes forming a team of up to 5 players and battle it out in a three-lane map where the goal is to defeat the enemy team. Teams capture “control points” as they move forward on the map, which summons AI minions that can be used in swarms to distract or provide cover to heroes. Upon defeating the enemy team, the team that turns out the victor gets gold and experience points which can be used to buy various items to upgrade the hero’s strength and increases the player’s ranking. Experience points can also be used to upgrade skills the heroes already possess.

A chinese phenomenon

Realm of the Titans has been a hugely popular game in China and other Asian countries, and it continues to receive patches, bug fixes, and updates regularly. It encourages a competitive gaming environment where winning is based on skills and experience, and not money. As of 2017, Realm of the Titans is still going strong in China, with over 156 heroes and more added regularly.
