Having trouble playing Adobe Flash games? Ruffle can help with that!Michael

A review by Michael

Ruffle is an emulator available natively on Rust that runs on modern systems as a standalone application to emulate Flash Player and lets you play your favorite Flash games without any security concerns.

Pros

  • Available for multiple platforms
  • Built on Rust
  • Open-source
  • Seamless upgrade of websites using Flash
  • Avoids security drawbacks of Flash
  • Easy to install and use

Cons

  • Some portions may be unsafe

A Flash Player emulator written in Rust, Ruffle lets you avoid the safety and security drawbacks of Flash while enjoying your archived games and apps. It also works on modern browsers with the use of WebAssembly. The application is easy to install and use and starts playing existing Flash files without any additional configuration required.

Once installed, Ruffle detects existing Flash content on websites and adds it to the Flash player to facilitate a seamless upgrade of websites relying on Flash. It is an open-source project that volunteers can contribute to. Ruffle can be used in one of three ways – embedded as web assembly, as a standalone desktop application, and through a browser extension.

Talking about its safety, Ruffle is coded in Rust and benefits from the built-in memory protection feature of the programming language to avoid any memory bugs that could result in vulnerabilities in the Flash player. While some parts of the code utilize the unsafe Rust feature, most part uses memory protection to improve its overall security.

Final Verdict

If you have a collection of Adobe Flash games but no Player, the standalone application or browser extension of Ruffle is a great way to play your old favorite games in Mac OS, Windows, and Linux as well as iOS and Android devices. It uses the platform’s memory protection feature to avoid any vulnerabilities otherwise associated with Flash player. This emulator is overall a great tool for playing SWF files without any security concerns.
