A review by Peter

Guilty Gear 2: Overture is an action and real-time strategy (RTS) video game developed by Arc System Works Studio for the Xbox 360 platform, and was originally released for this platform on November 29, 2007 for Japan and October 7, 2008 for North America, with the European Union version being released a year later on September 25, 2009. Overture is the fourth main game in the Guilty series, and takes place 5 years after the story of the original Guilty Gear, and is the first game in the series to be playable in 3D. No main sequels to the game have been announced, although several spin-offs to the game have been released since the release of the original.

The story of Guilty Gear 2: Overture

The story of Guilty Gear follows the adventures of the protagonist of the first game, Sol Badguy, who is now free and is traveling with a young warrior known as Sin. Ky Kiske, now the ruler of a country named Illyria, has now noticed two developments: the first being that the titular Gears that were sealed very long ago have started to vanish one by one, and the second being that his kingdom in now under attack by a mysterious that he can’t deal with. Ky realizes that Sol might be the only one capable of fixing this situation, and so he sends out a “wanted” poster of Sol’s face in it, demanding that he be brought before him, alive. Sol realizes Ky’s plea for help, and he, together with Sin, decide to rush to his rescue while being pursued and fought by mysterious doll-like women carrying large wrenches. It is up to Sol, Sin, and Ky to figure out the mystery and deal with it before the entire kingdom of Illyrio falls in jeopardy.

A MOBA styled multiplayer

Aside from the main storyline, Overture also has a well-crafted multiplayer system, with the online mode being inspired by the popular Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne mod Defense of the Ancients (DotA). Players choose to play as one of the available 6-7 main characters present in the story. Each match has a pre-determined timer. Players have their own bases, and at each player’s base is a “Masterghost”—a stationary object, which is also the point where players respawn after they die. Players combat each other while gaining ‘ghosts’—territory points around the map—and controlling minion troops that fight for them. Players also have ‘servants’ that will go where they tell them to and fight enemy servants along the way. Servants are also capable of attacking Masterghosts, however, they can’t destroy it. The goal of the match is to destroy the enemy’s Masterghost, and the first player to do so wins the match. A game can also be won by simply killing the enemy players too many times so that the Masterghost is unable to revive them anymore. Another way to win the game is to collect more ghosts (the territory points) than the other player, and if they have equal numbers of it, then the match is settled by who has the most health at the end of the game when the timer runs out.

TL;DR Guilty Gear 2: Overture is an action and real-time strategy (RTS) video game developed by Arc System Works Studio.
