Ghost Recon Wildlands takes tactical shooters to a whole new level

A review by Peter

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a tactical shooter video game developed by Ubisoft Paris and published by Ubisoft on March 7th, 2017. It was released on three platforms: Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Game story

Ghost Recon Wildlands, as the game is commonly shortened to, is set in drug-infested Bolivia which has become the world’s largest drug supplier. These drugs are controlled by the massive drug cartel named “Santa Blanca”, a powerful organization that has destabilized the country. These cartels, having posed a significant threat to the US government, must now face elite operational units called “Ghosts” sent by the US military. These units must destroy the cartel, and expose links between Santa Blanca and the corrupt Bolivian government. The play must play as a member of the “Ghosts” team.

Pick your weapon

The player, apart from normal assault weaponry, can have access to several improvable items such as drones and grenades using in-game currency. The currency can be gained by stopping convoys, stealing airplanes as well as completing quests.

A busy development team

Since the release of the game, many updates and patches have been released by the game’s development team, bringing in dozens of bug fixes as well as new content, keeping the game exciting for veteran players. There have been major DLC released, namely Narco Road, Fallen Ghosts, Special Operations, Operation Watchman, Operation Archangel, Operation Silent Spade and Operation Oracle.

Bolivia isn’t too happy with the game

As expected, the Bolivian government was not too happy with the portrayal of the nation as a violent, corrupt drug infested state and even tried taking action against Ubisoft.

In March 2017, the Bolivian government expressed their dissatisfaction over the game’s portrayal of their country as a violent narco-state, and filed a formal complaint to the French embassy in La Paz. Bolivia’s Interior Minister Carlos Romero stated that the country has the standing to take legal action. In turn, Ubisoft responded with: “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a work of fiction, similar to movies or TV shows. Like all Tom Clancy’s games from Ubisoft, the game takes place in a modern universe inspired by reality, but the characters, locations and stories are all fantasies created solely for entertainment purposes. Bolivia was chosen as the background of this game based on its magnificent landscapes and rich culture. While the game’s premise imagines a different reality than the one that exists in Bolivia today, we do hope that the in-game world comes close to representing the country’s beautiful topography, and that players enjoy exploring the diverse and open landscapes it moved us to create.”
